Mutilation

However, when a dead body was found in a place without head, without two hands and feet, everybody was surprised. And all of us felt horrify to imagine a human body laid incompletely, not only without soul, but once again, it was also without hands and even without head. And, the most touching our heart, all was clearly the result of human behavior.

We still can’t believe, how a human being is able, dare and mercilessly do that kind of cruel action to another human being who at least is his friend, his neighbor, or just his acquaintance. We always can’t believe how a human being is able, dare and mercilessly to cut another human body, then bring it anywhere whether it is thrown or for something. That is really a behavior that perhaps has passed many processes, so the common sense, normal thinking, have lost their power for controlling the muscles that have done it.

And the incident that in a few days later becomes news headline in mass media continuously, of course doesn’t stop as news only. We play back again the time and the days half-intentionally or even truly intentionally. We remember, have we ever heard the same thing before?

In fact, it is not difficult to find and play back once again our memory about the same incidents. In fact, we have heard and read, that the incident of killing between human being by using the same way, in which the victim is cut alive or dead, has ever happened. The way that later is known as mutilation, apparently is not a new thing in the middle of our harmonious life between human being. The fact is that mutilation had been there or had happened in the pain of our historic civilization.

In normal life, the murder incident or action by using extreme ways, for example by cutting off the victim’s body into several parts, is a kind of behavior that always causes horrible and sadness with intense physiological pain, even for far people like us, who just read and watch its newsflash from the television. We are horrified and sad, how can a human being that has the same characteristic like us, loose their normal awareness so becomes sadist like that? Is there anything which has greatly entered and ruined our humanity, and then control our brain every time, muscle and our inner heart to leave our sense of humanity? Is it this which all this time we know as devil? If it is true, how come? Haven’t we been so religious in walking on this life? Doing many ritual ceremonies, prayers, etc? Does it become evident that all this time our religiosity only in form of a camouflage by camouflage?

Here, I am suddenly dazed to myself. It is that suddenly, how a large part of our humanity behavior only till the grey line, between sincere and that camouflage. And sadly, our religiosity is till the grey line too. Ironically, we have mutilated our religiosity so long, massively. Imagine how we really like cutting our holy book, taking its verses part by part to be adjusted and used for a moment need. How we really like to cut the holy ceremony, holy dance, holy place, holy land, to holy prayer, just for certain interest that if we want to be honest, it is much for self-interest that too exclusive, just for a little purpose, just for the partner, just for….. ah, in fact a large part of our religiosity has ignored our togetherness, ignored our universalism, and, ignored the humanity itself. Whereas, religion, holy ceremony and prayer, as how the world is, universe and life, based on the simplest understanding, they are ours and for us.

In a smaller space, for example in a nation, we have been so long doing mutilation continuously and massively to our nation. How we mutilate the symbol and the foundation of the state for our group’s interest and belief. Every politic party, in such a way mutilates the foundation and symbol of our state. One party just takes only its divinity, another party just takes its democration, another just takes its justice, another one just takes its unity and so on. We mutilate and cut happily the state’s foundation that had been created, implemented and agreed in one unity and belief for all people’s benefit, just for winning the interest that is pointed to the group’s authority. While, for some people who are not partner, who are not the member of the group or who are not from the same party, just become procession object for defending the eternity of that authority.

In daily life, we also mutilate continuously our mother earth, the place where we stand and live. We take its sand a sack by a sack, take its stone a basket by a basket, take its gold a gram by a gram, its iron, its steel, its medal, its cooper, its coal, its oil, its diamond, its valleys, its forest, its water, etc. How happily we cut part by part of the earth, ignored its suffering, while, we easily forgive ourselves in a moment when we are warned and realized by a disaster. Regretting our bad behavior to the universe and for forgiving ourselves, have always been done only from our side. We just pray and do ceremony together, and ask the God for giving the earth and the universe back. We just stop till a prayer, and then we feel that we do not need to implement it in our real life, how we are willing to heal the earth’s wound, the mother earth’s wound, the humanity’s wound that we have mutilated.

So, when a dead body was found in a place without head and two hands, or when another human body was found anywhere into several pieces, hopefully, we will remember that we all are creature that like to do mutilation and we have to stop that behavior soon!

Faithfulness

“Let me tell you about faithfulness,” said the leaf to the twig that it just leaved. The leaf had turned to yellow, whether because of its old age, or wilted by the heat, or it couldn’t strong to suffer from the wind and finally felt down to the ground. Whereas, when it still stuck on the twig, how it always told about the warmth, having the same faith, patience, and firmness on the wheel of time rotation.

“Let me tell you about faithfulness,” yelled the coral reef to the wave that it just leaved. The coral reef collapsed and sunk after many days, weeks, months and years crashed by the wind and scrapped off by the wave itself. Whereas, when it still stood up right, how it always told about strength of the heart, willingness to sacrifice, patience on the wheel of time rotation.

“Let me tell you about faithfulness,” whispered the dew to the morning that it just leaved. The dew slowly disappeared along with the sunshine coming toward the daylight. Its transparent and shiny had gone slowly, then on invisible vapor it joined up with the air that became warmer. Whereas, when it still stuck at the point of the dawn leaves, when it still hung spoiled on the sharp point of the grasses, how it always told about the firmness of waiting, how it always whispered about long -life expectations along the dawn.

“Let me tell you about faithfulness,” said the word to the lips that it just leaved. And said the sea-gull to the fish that it just preyed. Said water to the upper of a river that it just leaved to go to the downstream. Said the rain to the sky that it just leaved. Said the sound to the object that it just leaved. Said money to the pocket that it just leaved. Said the glum to the smile that it just replaced. Said the push to the pull that it just replaced. Said the heave to the hug that it just leaved. Said grey hair to the head- skin that it just grew. Said wrinkled to body that it just approached. Said silent to noisy that it just leaved…….

“Let me tell you about faithfulness,” said politic to the mass that it just lied. And also said the leader to the people that he just forgot. Said the judge to the law that he just betrayed. Said creditor to client that he just pressed. Said deny to promise that it just leaved. Said forget to remember that it just leaved…….

“Let me tell you about faithfulness,” whispered dream to sleep that it just leaved. Also said dirt to bottom that it just leaved. Said spittle to tongue that it just leaved. Said beautiful to ugly. Said young to old. Said January to December that it just leaved. Said blood to wound. Said pus to boil that had just broken. Said a patient to the hospital that he just leaved. Said position to pension. Said fire to charcoal that just became dust…

In a moment, we just stayed together in the room, then my love and I were surprised. We got a lot of faithful stuck on every corner. There was faithful hung on the hanger, there was faithful crawled on the roof. There was faithful swung on the door key. There was faithful waggled on the mirror. There was faithful spread on the magazine, books and newspapers. There was faithful spread on the shoestring, shock, sandal, breast holder, tissue box, television screen, cassettes, radio waves, telephone, clock, handkerchief, photo albums, 10 watt light bulb. There was faithful slithered on the other side of the blanket. There was breathless faithful in our kisses. There was wet faithful in our sweat. There was faithful that…..

“Faithfulness is not always when I am with you, tells about tomorrow while stroking small pores and smooth hairs in your whole skin. Faithfulness is not always when I need you and then you come. Faithfulness is not always when you next to me when I am sick, miss you and want to hear your voice. Faithfulness is not always when I utter intimacy from a thousand colors of soul. Faithfulness is not always when I kiss your forehead, touch your lips, embrace you, hold your hand when crossing the street, write a letter for you, or call you when I am far away, even hearing your words when we close…..,” my whisper for those gaze emptily in my grave one day…

about rivers

among us there is one who has
borrowed so many river spirits
moved them, even recreated them
graceful names of euphrates, tigris, rhine, nile,
huang ho, amazon, ganges
even the sick ciliwung in jakarta
the restless kapuas in kalimantan
or the doubtful code in yogyakarta

a nameless one has also told a story
of a small nameless river in their village.
a lyrical prose
that they believe come from the northern mountain’s longing
for the southern ocean. The small river that was said
to carry only a little clear water yet never ran out
shared among people, animals
even fish who were also nameless. And

still talking about rivers, I’d like to tell a story of
a blue-camouflaged road of blood that passed through
the long, slender neck down to the cleavage of my lover
for what is a river other than the love of god
for the rice plants and crops that give farmers their living.
and the veins beneath my lover’s body
are also mouthless rivers that god put in place
for a farmer or maybe a fish named
: me

Smile

“Why do you always smile?” asked that eight-year old boy. The elegant, good looking man, with mysterious gaze and thin lips that made him always seem to smile glanced slowly. For a second their eyes looked at each other. Then, the man replied: “because everything is so ridiculous.”

That short dialogue happened in a funeral ceremony. It appeared in a film entitled “Road to Perdition” starred by Paul Newman and Tom Hank. A film told about a life in mafia’s environment in Chicago 1931. A film told about how a family was murdered to protect the safety of an “oath”. The safety of an oath of allegiance to career or position on its environment. The film (as how a film is) told about self esteem, then grudge, then murder by murder, then, humanity.

Meanwhile, on the edge of a street in my hometown, a rumpled man, with untreated long hair, always seemed to smile at every single thing passing through him. The roar of vehicles, the sound of hooves from the horses pulling their cart, the people passing the street, the newsboys shouting, the swallows flying low, the swinging of Albesia leaves blown by the wind …… all were smiled by him. Unfortunately, (for some people who think that they are normal), the man who always smiled on the edge of the street was a mad man. Even if he was asked, he always replied: “because everything is so ridiculous.”

“Smile is love language. Affection language. Life language. God language,” said a poet in one twilight in front of his lover. But, not all people are mad. But, not all people who always smile are in love, loving each other, or happy. My friend ever smiled just because he didn’t know what he should do. He just smiled. He just smiled when his boss scolded to him. He just smiled when his wife grumbled about increased prices. She just smiled when her neighbor told that her husband was unfaithful to her. He just smiled when he watched from the television the criminals in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Makasar, and so forth …… were arrested by the police. When he was asked of why he always smiled, he replied: “as long as smile is not yet forbidden.”

That’s right. Due to smile is not (yet) forbidden, then let us smile. Let us smile when we make friend. Let us smile when we work. Let us smile when we feel hunger. Let us smile when felling angry, when feeling sick, when feeling sad, when feeling amused, when sleeping, when dreaming, when bathing, when brushing the teeth, when hit, when receiving, when giving, when loosing, when stealing, when praying, when betrayed, when…. And so on. Let us smile to see how this nation is managed by our leaders. Let us smile at the economic that doesn’t get better. Let us smile when the rains and flashflood come and landslides because of denudation forest. Let us smile when dry season becomes longer. Let us smile when people fight for making parties. Smile when people beat each other for a thousand and one reasons that now easily to be found.

Let give smile. Give our smile for poor people. Give our smile for the prisoners. Give our smile for the terrorists. Give our smile for the parents. Give our smile for the functionaries that forget themselves because of a lot of busy activities. Give our smile for the pickpockets. Give our smile for the journalists. Give our smile for the children. Give our smile for the trees. Give our smile for the sky, the air, the clouds, the stars, the sun, the airplane flying above the head, the kites hooked on the electricity pole or telephone pole or twigs.

Whatever, the types of smile you would like to give. Sweet smile for beloved people, sour smile for people annoying us, forced smile for those funny people, small smile for the fortunes, broad smile for the boss, smiles by yourself if it is needed.

By smiling frequently, it means that we are easy to smile. Easily smile doesn’t mean that we are easygoing. If we smile for live and life, perhaps our live will be more opened. Furthermore, if we smile for the God, surely our face will seem to be better.

LOVE

“If I die, I choose to die by way of love”, said a friend in a moment. How romantic he is. He wants to die by a way namely love. Whereas, love never dies. Love is not death. And love will never understand about death.

Love never dies. Although it is tortured or hurt. Many people had tried and attempted to kill love. There was by betraying, there was by insulting, there was by slandering, there was by lying, there was even by a sword. But, there it is, love apparently never dies.

Many people attempted to kill love. There was parent who tried to kill his son’s love to his lover because of caste, position, rank, wealth, honor, prestige, etc. There was a brother who killed his younger sister’s love because of certain reason. There was someone who killed one’s love just because he wanted to grasp the love itself. There was someone who killed love because of love itself. In fact, love can’t die. Love never dies!

Love is the source of life. Love is inspiration. Love is a feeling that cannot be interpreted by words. Love is something that cannot be explained by formula, theory, logical, common sense, philosophy, constitutions, government regulations, awig-awig, tradition, culture, law, poem, song, and so on. Love is nature language. Love is mad, but not madness.

Love can only be expressed without being able to be translated. Love can be expressed by flower, but flower is not the translation of love. Love can be expressed by poem, but poem is not the translation of love either. Love can be expressed by song, by letter, by common words, by diamond ring, by money, by a palace, by car, by position, by expensive gifts, by ……, love can be expressed only by a glance or even by a flash smile.

However, love can kill. That’s love which killed a boy by a plastic rope in his neck one day. That’s love which killed a girl in a night by a bottle of insecticide. That’s love which killed a soldier in a territory limits by a gun because he couldn’t strong enough to restrain his longing to his lover. That’s love which killed the colonizers. That’s love which killed the oppressors. That’s love which killed the terrorists. That’s love which killed hatred. That’s love which killed expectation. That’s love which killed normal thinking. Love also killed madness.

So, when love killed Juliet, love also killed Romeo. When love killed Sam Pek, love also killed Ing Tay. When love killed Jayaprana, love also killed Layonsari. When love killed my lover’s feeling, love also killed me from this normal life.

That’s way, many people said that love is a blessing and a curse! If I was given a chance to have a love, I would never afraid to endure the curse. It is because I believe, God who becomes the source of all love, will smile happily to see my love and someone who I love. Finally, what is better than walking on this love, to make the God be happy?
